Welcome to the Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity Magnet Gardens!
The Powell gardens and outdoor classrooms are educational spaces and part of our initiative to create a local food system that is based on community empowerment through education developing strength, hope and resiliency in our students.
The mission of our project is to create a space where kids can learn about and interact with their food source. It teaches our students and school community about sustainability through gardening. We embed lessons using 21st century skills and project based learning teaching the importance of environmental stewardship, sustainability, individual responsibility and impact. These lessons tie to all of our common core standards and are taught within our core classes and elective programs.
The outcome of our garden project is a stimulating place for play, learning, and environmental education at our school. The fruits of our labor also go back to feeding our school community. Teaching and learning in our school gardens cultivates knowledge, empathy and the action needed for practicing healthy, nutritional, sustainable living.
